Connor Zilich Scores First Xfinity Series Victory at Pocono with Dale Jr. as Crew Chief

Connor Zilich took a major step in his NASCAR journey by winning his first Xfinity Series race at Pocono Raceway. The 17-year-old driver delivered an impressive performance in just his fifth career start, holding off veterans during a late-race restart to secure the win. The moment was already big, but it became even more memorable with Dale Earnhardt Jr. calling the race as interim crew chief.

Zilich’s regular crew chief was unavailable for the weekend, so Earnhardt Jr. stepped in at the last minute. While Earnhardt is well known as a driver and team owner, this race marked what is believed to be his first official victory as a crew chief at any national level.

“I knew we had a shot, but to do it with Dale Jr. on the box is something I’ll never forget,” Zilich said. “He kept me calm and focused the whole race. That made the difference.”

Zilich’s background includes success in Trans Am and karting, and he has been gaining attention as one of the most promising young drivers in the development pipeline. His win at Pocono added weight to the hype. It was a measured, mature drive from start to finish, and it showed he is ready for more.

Earnhardt Jr. was quick to praise the effort.

“I’ve won a lot of races in different roles, but this one feels special,” he said. “Connor did everything right. I just wanted to support him and help him stay locked in.”

The win marks a milestone for both Zilich and Earnhardt Jr. It strengthens the case for Zilich as a serious future contender in the sport and adds a new chapter to Earnhardt’s involvement with JR Motorsports. Whether he decides to sit atop the pit box again remains to be seen, but for one afternoon at Pocono, the duo found a winning formula.
