Hendrick Motorsports Names Justin Allgaier as Reserve Driver for Kyle Larson’s Indy 500/Coca-Cola 600 Double Duty

In a move that brings both experience and dependability to the forefront, Hendrick Motorsports officially announced today that Justin Allgaier will serve as the reserve driver for Kyle Larson during his highly anticipated “Double Duty” attempt, running the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day.

This decision is not only strategic, it’s smart. Allgaier has already proven himself capable in this exact role. In 2024, when weather delayed the Indy 500, he stepped in mid-race and piloted the No. 5 Chevrolet for 249 laps in the Coca-Cola 600, finishing 13th. That performance helped solidify trust between Allgaier and the Hendrick organization.

Allgaier’s 2025 campaign has already seen him step up on the big stage. In a memorable moment for JR Motorsports, he qualified for and finished ninth in the Daytona 500, giving Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s team a top-10 finish in their NASCAR Cup Series debut. Though he was filling a one-off role, Allgaier’s performance once again demonstrated his readiness and calm under pressure, exactly what a reserve driver must bring to the table.

Today’s announcement adds another layer of confidence for Hendrick Motorsports as Kyle Larson prepares for one of the most demanding days in motorsports. With Allgaier on standby, the team knows the No. 5 car is in trusted hands, no matter what the day may bring.
