Indianapolis 500 Practice Day 1 | Delayed but continues.

The opening day of practice for the 109th Indianapolis 500 on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, was significantly impacted by weather conditions. Rain and lightning delayed the start of the session by over two hours, limiting track activity to approximately three hours in the afternoon .


Top Practice Times


Despite the shortened session, several drivers managed to post competitive lap times. Team Penske's Will Power led the field with a fastest lap of 227.026 mph. His teammate, Josef Newgarden, closely followed with a lap at 226.915 mph. Scott Dixon of Chip Ganassi Racing posted the third-fastest time at 226.846 mph .


Practice Session Overview


The inclement weather not only delayed the session but also disrupted the planned schedule, including the Rookie Orientation Program (ROP) and refresher tests. Despite these challenges, teams utilized the available track time to gather valuable data and assess car performance under less-than-ideal conditions.


Upcoming Practice Sessions


Looking ahead, the practice schedule for Wednesday, May 14, is as follows:


10:00 AM – 12:00 PM ET: Refresher tests for drivers needing additional track time.


12:00 PM – 6:00 PM ET: Open practice session for all competitors .



Teams and drivers will aim to capitalize on the upcoming sessions to fine-tune their setups and strategies in preparation for the qualifying rounds and the race itself.
